This pitch (and some business due diligence) was usually enough for a publisher to decide whether the game was worth financing. Once the project was green-lit, the first phase of development, ‘pre-production’, would begin, and a small team of designers would produce a several-hundred page game design document. This document was used as a blueprint for the production of the game and project planning; that is, for breaking down the elements of the game so that they could be costed and scheduled, and as a means of communicating all the elements of the design to the publisher so they knew what they were getting. A prototype, or perhaps more than one prototype, was then produced.

Aside from leveling, the main path of progression is through a fairly extensive tech tree. Crafting a certain number of an item tied to a technology I already had (say, Woodworking) would unlock the technology immediately after it (such as better weaponry). This felt natural and intuitive, as I didn’t have to worry about building anything just for arbitrary “science points.” It’s like leveling up in an Elder Scrolls game by actually using your skills, instead of assigning ranks after meeting experience thresholds and I found myself wondering why more strategy games haven’t gone that route. For the less ambitious players you can use pre-designed templates to simply place buildings and objects in the game world. But you are able to build with individual bricks if you want, which is crucial if this really wants to compete with Minecraft. But as anyone that’s ever tried to use one of the various Lego designer tools on their computer will know, this is not an easy thing to do even with fairly simple projects. And that’s using a mouse and keyboard.
